Division Shadow:
The Basics
What is Division Shadow?
Division Shadow is an original graphic novel. It is designed to blend the character based storytelling style traditionally associated with independent comics with the blockbuster action and 'big budget' settings traditionally associated with 'mainstream' comics. The story is set in three different locations, each illustrated by a different artist. Each of the stories is connected by the presence of the covert military organization called Division Shadow.
One story is about David Young, a rising star in the military who is offered a chance to join Division Shadow, his wife, Jill, who is struggling with working a full time job and being a wife and mother, married to a man who is oblivious to her pain, largely due to his infatuation with a prisoner he captured during a raid on a laboratory.
In the Middle Eastern borderlands, Tara Graham has set up a camp for refugees who have been thrown out of their homes by the US military. She works with a fellow American, Matt, and she is counting on an alliance with Al-Fayed, a local crime lord. However, a military General is plotting to destroy their camp, and Al-Fayed is caught between the two factions.
Finally, an old man, Jeffery Wynter, is dying of cancer, but before he dies, he asks his nurse to find a man named CX-097 for him, without attracting the attention of the Division Shadow troops who are hovering around his hospital room.
And in the end, all these disparate lives will connect.
Who is Division Shadow?
The book consists of fifteen main characters, but behind the scenes it's seven people bringing you the book. Patrick Meaney is the writer, Nicolas Colacitti is the artist for part one, Carlos Devizia and Marcelo Carmona are drawing the second and Shawn Decker draws the third. Damian Duffy is the letterer.
Why Division Shadow?
I made this book because independent comics are not taking advantage of the fact that the medium has no discrimination between the biggest stories and the smallest, they're all just ink on paper. So, there's no reason that indie comics need to emulate indie films and stay small. This is a book with huge scope, that I hope will convey a mosaic of lives, all connected by this one organization.
When is Division Shadow?
The first two chapters are now available in minicomic format. The book will be serialized in six minicomic chapters, and will eventually be released in a collected graphic novel format, in the summer of 2006.
